Cruelty Free at Wegmans

Shopping for cruelty free products can be a bit overwhelming when you are just starting out. Trust me, I know! I've been on my cruelty free journey officially for 6 months now and I still struggle in the grocery store, at CVS, at ULTA. So I decided to lend a helping hand. This is the first in a series of posts where I ask YOU where you shop and share cruelty free brands at those stores/websites.

I posed the question today via twitter and got this response from Emma:

So here you are Emma! This is by no means a completely comprehensive list of cruelty free companies sold through Wegmans, but it's definitely a good start:
Looking for something specific? Hoping to find a cruelty free shave gel? Need that perfect cruelty free mascara? Want to wash your dishes with a clean conscious? Please feel free to tweet at me! I am always happy to help.

Cruelty Free Summer Sandals

It's officially time for summer sandals here in the Nation's Capital. Today was so humid outside, as I walked across the mall from Smithsonian Affiliations in L'Enfant Plaza to a meeting at The National Museum of the American Indian my hair curled. Literally. The humidity curled my hair in a 15 minute walk. Fun times.

Not only did my walk end in curly hair, it also ended in swollen, sticky feet. Gross, I know, but swampy humidity is a fact of life here in DC. Fear not my fashion forward friends! That just means it's time for NEW SHOES! Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! Something with a little more room to breeeeeath. All nine of these sandals are from ModCloth and best of all they are all Cruelty Free!! Long live sweet baby cows!

From Top to Toe Flat  |  Walk Around the Colorblock Sandal  |  Twist It Up Flat
Dreaming on the Dock Sandal  |  Boardwalk Lemonade Sandal  |  Prancing Through the Petals Sandal
Oh Strappy Day Flat  |  Prance in the Park Flat  |  Impromptu Date Sandal

Do you like any of these? Which is your favorite? Tweet at me and let me know!

Full Coverage Swim Bottoms

It's that time of year again. Bathing suit season, where I begin my annual search for a full coverage swim bottom.

So here's the dish. I've got a big ol' booty, an extra long torso, and strikingly pale skin. The thought of finding bathing suits to meet all my hyper specific needs can be overwhelming.

... ... deeeeeeeeeep breeeeeeeath ... ...

I can't wear a one piece (even though that would be my preference) because my torso is even too long for long torso suits. I can't wear a two piece because I burn so easily and am prone to skin cancer. I need a swim bottom that is FULL coverage. Any bikini bottom is guaranteed to go straight up my toosh; I need something that is a full coverage short. AND last but not least, I want to look good.

Each year I begin the search anew and add pieces to my "cover this body up as stylishly as possible" arsenal. Last year I snagged some great swim shorts from target in both black and blue. They are a bit loose around the waistband area, but not horribly so. Frankly, that may not be an issue for everyone. I happen to fall on the end of the curvy scale with a size small waist and size large booty. This year I ordered this striped rashguard (with a SPF 50 rating) and these boy-short bottoms from Old Navy. The top is quite flattering. The bottoms are comfortable, but have a much lower rise than the pair from Target, so be advised.

Women's Striped Rashguard Swim Top in Black Stripe | Women's Mix & Match Boy-Short Bottoms in Ebony | Mossimo® Women's Mix and Match Swim Short -Indigo Night | H&M Braided Straw Bag | Forever21 Chunky Canvas Sandals

So what do you all think? Do you like the bag and sandals I've paired this up with? Do you have any super awesome full coverage swim suit resources? Do you have any super ultra extra long torso resources? Are you comfortable flaunting it all at the beach and pool? Are you more modest like me? Do you sometimes feel like a nut? Sometimes you don't? Do you think I should wear a red scarf around my neck with this suit and pretend to be a mime on the beach?

Vegan Leather Trim Sweater

A vegan leather trim sweater? I know what you're thinking. Isn't it almost summer? Well yes.

Buuuuuuut... As per the trend of this entire year so far, the weather the past week has been pretty bonkers. I drove down to Norfolk, VA to play a show last Thursday and it was 91. Yesterday I drove up to NYC and it was 58. Really spring? Can we call it halvsies and stick with something in the 70s?

Anyway, short story: I was cold in New York, which made me really wish I had a nice warm sweater coat and some comfy pants.

Cruelty Free Haul - Nasty Gal

Nasty Gal gets me every time. Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend they offered an additional 50% off already reduced prices. A sale on a sale (GAH!), how could I resist? Here's what I snagged and it's all Cruelty free!

Nasty Gal does a really good job labeling the content of all their items, which is hugely appreciated by consumers like me. Both pairs of shoes are all synthetic materials and the brushes are synthetic as well. I'm still struggling to find cosmetic brushes I love since going cruelty free. I'll keep you posted on how I feel about this set in a few weeks.

Did you guys partake in any holiday sales? What'd you get?? Tweet at me and share your super awesome finds!

Cruelty Free Cosmetics

Interestingly, I've had 3 friends from completely separate social circles ask me about cruelty free cosmetics recently. I supposed now would be the opportune time to share some of my personal experiences as well as a butt load of resources for people interested in supporting the Cruelty Free Cause!

For years and years (and years) I was a die hard MAC girl. I loved their products. Loved. And it was a company I could easily feel good about supporting because they were cruelty free. And then a sad, sad, sad day came. MAC changed their policy regarding animal testing, and by my standards (and the standards of many other cosmetic enthusiasts) I decided I could no longer purchase their products. Thus began my awareness on the issue and my slow transition to going completely cruelty free.

I'm gonna be totally up front right now, it's not easy. That being said it's not hard, it just takes some work.

Let's talk personal decisions. Cruelty Free means a lot of different things to different people. For me it started with cosmetics. Then I got to thinking... What about all the other personal care products in my house? And what about all the cleaning products in my house? And what about all my leather shoes? And what about the eggs and milk I still consume? The further down the rabbit hole (bunniiiieeeesss!!) I went, the more I realized how important it was for me to support companies I could feel good about. I wholeheartedly believe though, that ANY step into the cruelty free world is positive. If it's just cosmetics for you, that's AWESOME. If it's cosmetics and avoiding leather, that's AWESOME. If it's just talking to your friends and doing a little research on animal testing, that's AWESOME.

With all that being said and without further ado, here is a list of Cruelty Free Resources I use on the regular:

People process change at totally different rates. If you slip up, don't beat yourself up, we all slip up. Just get back on the wagon and forge on. Know that there is a HUGE community out there to support you if you have any questions. Me especially! Tweet at me, Email me, Post questions on my Facebook page, Follow my Pinterest boards. I am more than happy to help where I can.

xoxox kat

**Just a note to clarify, terms like "cruelty free," "vegan," and "not tested on animals" are not necessarily interchangeable.  For example, some companies may not test on animals, however have animal byproducts in their cosmetics (or other products) making them NOT vegan. Many people feel that to be considered truly cruelty free a company must be vegan as well as not test on animals. Feel free to ask me questions if you need more info**

Electric Palette - Urban Decay

Another day, another look with my new favorite makeup palette. The Electric Palette by Urban Decay is still inspiring me. Today I used Chaos, Freak, and Thrash.

I started the look by lining my eyes with Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Chaos about a third of the way in from the outer corner on both the top and bottom lids. I then switched to Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Freak. On the upper lid I continued the line another third of the way toward the center. On the bottom lid I took it all the way to the tear duct. Next I pulled out a small angled brush and dipped into the Electric Palette. I started by going over the Chaos liner with Chaos pigment. I then switched to a clean small angled brush and went over the Freak liner with Freak pigment. Without cleaning that brush I used it to blend Chaos in to Freak. I finally grabbed another clean small angled brush and loaded up on Thrash. I started at the inner corner and took the pigment out to meet Freak and blend the two together. As usual, I finished the look by curling my lashes and applying a couple layers of NYX Voluptuous LL04 mascara.

Urban Decay - Electric Palette

I'm still having a grand time playing with Urban Decay's Electric Palette, so I decided to share a couple looks I created that are a little more subtle than my Rainbow Eyes from last week. You can check out all my looks from the Electric Palette HERE.

I started first by priming my lid with ud's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I then brushed on a light sweep of Paradisco by MAC* across the lid. Next I lined my eye with NYX's Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk using a small angle brush. Then using a clean small angle brush I started at the inner corner of the lid with Savage transitioning to Jilted, Urban and finally Chaos. I did not clean my brush between transitions. After that, with a clean small angle brush I went back to the upper inner eyelid and applied a bit of Slowburn. I finished the look with NYX Voluptuous Lush Lash Mascara.

This cherry blossom inspired look started exactly the same as the look above. I started first by priming my lid with ud's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I then brushed on a light sweep of Paradisco by MAC* across the lid. Next I lined my eye with NYX's Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk using a small angle brush. Then using a clean small angle brush I started at the inner corner of the lid with Slowburn. About halfway across the lid I transitioned to Savage and finally blended a small bit of Jilted in the outer corner. I did not clean my brush between transitions. I finished the look with NYX Voluptuous Lush Lash Mascara.

*MAC products are no longer cruelty free. Until this changes I will no longer purchase their products. Since, however, I have so much of their product still I will be using it until it is depleted.

So tell me, do you have the Electric Palette yet? I wanna know your thoughts! What do you like/dislike about it?

Electric Palette - Urban Decay

When I turned 18, I got my first credit card at Nordstrom. This was a pretty exciting thing because not only did they carry size 11 shoes, but they also sold Urban Decay and Hard Candy Nail polishes. Be still my alt 90's heart!

Urban Decay seems to be best known for their Naked Palettes these days, but what I fell in love with them over was rad punk rock polish. Which in fact is why I am SO EXCITED to talk about this return to alternative with the Electric Palette! Sure, sure, they have had some bright colors in their single shadows and 24/7 liners, but this is a serious, in-your-face, crazy-color palette. Plus, ahem, it's CRUELTY FREE!

Obviously, I'm pretty stoked on this palette and my first go around I emulated VintageOrTacky's Rainbow eye. It's a little different since our eyes are shaped a bit differently, but if you want to give this look a try check out her video embedded below.

To really make these pressed pigments pop I started the look with NYX jumbo eye pencil in Milk all over the upper and lower lid. My look included: Chaos in the crease, Urban and Jilted Above the crease in the browbone area, Fringe on the lid. On the lower lid I gradated from Urban to Jilted to Slowburn, Thrash is on the tearduct. I put just a touch of Revolt in the little divot between my nose and lid. The black liner is 24/7 liquid liner in Perversion and the mascara is NYX Voluptuous LL04. For my brows I used MAC Sassy Grass eye shadow. All of the products I used are cruelty free except the MAC shadow*

*I used to be a die hard MAC user, but unfortunately they are no longer cruelty free. Until this changes I will no longer purchase their products. Since, however, I have so much of their product still I will be using it until it is depleted.

ASOS Medley pointed flat shoes

ASOS Medley Pointed Flat Shoes

If I were an elf, I would wear these shoes every day. I'm not, so if I did get them, I'd only wear them on occasion. You know, so no one thinks I'm an elf...

Cruelty Free Handbag

Big Buddha Handbag, Penn Hobo

You know what is awesome? When you realize a company you have long supported is cruelty free. I've had many Big Buddha purses in the past and this Penn Hobo is on my current "want" list. Soft imitation leather, minimal yet edgy hardware, and at just under $100 it's as if it was made just for me!
